2008-06-12 · The FRBR and FRAD Conceptual Models presented by Pat Riva. June 12, 2008 2 Overview It is a continuation of the work done on the FRBR model, detailing how "entities that serve as subjects of intellectual or artistic endeavor" can be related and controlled within the bibliographic universe. The model is intended to support global sharing and reuse of subject authority data. The entities, relationships, and attributes in IFLA’s FRBR model enable us to fulfill objectives of the catalog and will help us better provide bibliographic control in a global environment. FRBR brings a new vocabulary, new terminology, and a conceptual model that seems more relevant to today’s Internet and digital world.

FRBR's main impact was that it provided a mental model of the bibliographic universe that reflects a conceptual view of the elements of descriptive cataloging. You will find nothing in FRBR that could not be found in standard library cataloging of the 1990's, which is when the FRBR model was developed.

Most evidently, an rdfs:frbr based implementation model for catalogues on the Web would effectively solve the problem of catalogue records being buried in the 'hidden Web' and would make all objects, instances, attributes, and relations of information objects modelled in catalogues WWW-transparent. FRBR is a conceptual model that defines four different entities in an attempt to alter the ways in which catalogers catalog items so that they can be more uniform, more trimmed down, and more accessible by users. Its most pertinent components are succinctly described below. FRBR conceptualizes three groups of entities:

The FRBR model of bibliographic data is the most radical change to library catalog thinking since Panizzi developed his ninety-one rules for the British Museum Catalog. The model presented by FRBR is complex, but it is made even FRBR Model for Macbeth. Once I completed my model, I went back and re-read the two articles.
